TOUGH ROUND FOR WILLIAM HALL MOTORSPORT
After qualifying the William Hall Motorsport Spectrum 06 on third position for
Round 2 of the Western Australian Formula Ford State Championship at Barbagallo
Raceway, William Hall endured one of the most difficult weekends of his career.
Struggling with a brake problem all weekend, William was overjoyed to qualify
the Spectrum where he did. "For some reason we have a problem with the left front
wheel. I just can't stop the wheel from locking. Every time I hit the pedal, bang,
the left front locks, so qualifying third is a bit of a get out of jail card really,"
the 26 year old West Australian reflected.
It took 2 shots and an overnight break to get Race One underway. Fortunately
for Hall, the first attempt on Saturday evening was aborted after only a handful
of laps. "The brake problem is still there. If that one had have gone full distance
we would have been a lot further back by the end!"
Take two saw the re-emergence of the brake problem, although not as severe. "I
have worked a bit of a way around it, its still there, but I am able to control
it." Justin Locke (Van Diemen) was able to pass William early on in the race which
left William fighting with youngsters Simon Wheeler (Van Diemen) and Formula Ford
rookie Michael Epple (Van Diemen).
"That's one of the best races I have competed in. Simon and I had a fantastic
race and fortunately we were able to hold him out and salvage fourth spot," Hall
said post race. Mark Douglas was the run away winner.
Race Two was all heading in the right direction for Hall. Driving around the
brake problem, Hall had the Net Velocity Spectrum up to third place and was comfortably
catching Locke for second.
On the last of eight laps Hall passed Locke for second place exiting the super
fast Kolb corner and the two ran side by side down Tate Straight heading towards
the final turn with Hall on the inside and Locke on the outside. "More than a
small dose of brain fade I think. Before the apex he has just turned into me,
I am very disappointed." Both cars ended the race in the turn 7 sand trap. Mark
Douglas went on to take the win.
Race Three was a non event for William Hall Motorsport. Team Manager Colin Hall
electing not to let the car run in the final race.
"Starting this one from the back of the grid with the damage that the car is
now carrying and with the brake problem the car has, we have decided to sit this
one out and come back fighting for Round 3," Colin said.
Round Three of the Western Australian Formula Ford State Championship will be
held on June 12.
